On completion of a major sequence in English, students are expected to have developed:
* an understanding of the major literary forms as they have emerged and evolved in relationship to the cultures of their production and transmission;
* the skills of literary criticism in order to interpret the major literary forms in the context of those cultures;
* the capacity to analyse the cultural role of literature in modern societies.
The English program offers subjects in literature and media studies. The subjects in literature cover the significant fields of English literary history and some important areas of writing in the language since the mid-nineteenth century. They aim at developing an understanding of the major literary forms, at teaching the skills of literary criticism, and at developing a capacity to analyse the cultural role of literature in modern societies.
The study of media involves an introductory subject which describes and analyses the role played by various media in modern societies. Upper-level subjects from mass communications are available in the English major.
The program caters for the needs of students who are developing careers in the areas of the social sciences, administration and education. Subjects are also available as supporting studies for students in welfare, business, visual arts and applied science. They are recognised and supported by the Directorate of School Education for professional purposes.
