Human service organisations

Different theoretical approaches to organisations: rational, systems, action, conflict approaches. Organisational structures and processes. Human service organisations: types, environment, people, goals, communication, power, conflict, decision making, change, effectiveness. Management: models, staff recruitment, coordination, supervision, teamwork, volunteers, clients, financial management. Administrative issues: funding and service agreements, accountability, the problem of quantification, productivity assessment, staff appraisal, industrial relations, information processing, use of consultants and lobbyists.

Assessment

Written (6000 words): 80% * Seminar participation: 20%
