Asian cinema

8 points * 4 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisite: At least one of VSA1040, VSA1050, VSA2190 or VA103.06

The subject involves an examination of films by the major Japanese directors Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa and Oshima, and of some films by Indian directors, including the work of Satyajit Ray, and an example from the Bombay commercial cinema. Some examples of films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Peoples Republic of China may also be included.

Essay (2000 words): 33% * Essay (3000 words): 50% * Visual test (1 hour): 17%
