(i) Language: a review of Ukrainian grammar; development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes. (ii) Literature and society: an introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine in the nineteenth century; the study of selected literary texts from Kotliarevs'kyi to Franko.
