A prominent social theorist

This subject explores the life and times of Confucius, his teachings and the application of his ideas for a sociological understanding of Asia and Australia. Confucius' concepts (eg `self,' `human being,' social relationships, family, society), will be examined in the following areas: `man and nature,' role of women, parent-children (especially the father-son relationship) and Christianity, the notion of `a Chinese culture' and the business cultures of Asia (eg Singapore, Malaysia, China, Japan). A comparison of Confucius' ideas with those drawn from sociologists such as Max Weber, George Herbert Mead and the phenomenologists will be examined.

Assessment

Tutorial presentation with exercises (2000 words): 30% * Essay (3000 words): 40% * Test (1 hour): 30%
