Sociology of ageing

Proposed to be offered next in 1996

8 points * 3 hours per week * First semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent

Location of aged population in modern industrialised societies. Conceptual problems and boundaries of the field of study. Sociological perspectives of the ageing: structural-functionalism, symbolic interactionism, social phenomenology, conflict perspective and feminist perspectives. Problems in theory and methodology. Ageing and its relationship to the wider political context of health and welfare.

Assessment

One tutorial presentation with exercises (2000 words): 30% * One essay (3000 words): 40% * Test (1 hour): 30%
