Deviance and social control

8 points * 3 hours per week * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent

Conceptual problems in the field of study. Sociological and psychological perspectives: medical model, psychoanalytical models, structural-functionalist, crosscultural, Marxist, feminist, symbolic interactionist. Substantive areas: mental illness, crime, domestic violence and sexual deviations (eg paedophiles, transvestites, transsexuals).

Assessment

Tutorial presentation with exercises (2000 words): 30% * Essay (3000 words): 40% * Test (1 hour): 30%
