Sociology of education

8 points * 3 hours per week * First semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent

An examination of structured inequalities in education especially those of class and gender. The main theoretical perspectives to be studied are functionalism, Marxist theories, Weberian theories, the contribution made by Bourdieu, feminist criticisms of education and poststructuralist theories. Some topics to be discussed are the development of educational institutions in Australia, programs and policies for the integration of `disabled' students, power and control, the private/public school issue, gender-related problems, and schools and the economy.

Assessment

Essay (2000 words): 30% * Seminar paper (2000 words): 40% * Test (2 hours): 30%
