Sociology of the family

8 points * 3 hours per week * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent

The complexity of relationships between family life, the economic structure, employment, social policy and ideology. Theoretical and historical examination of the family, and the state, patriarchy, the `new' father, mothering, work and family, sexual partnering and gender relationships, divorce and the future of the family. Major theoretical perspectives will be Marxist, feminist and functionalist.

Assessment

Essay (2000 words): 30% * Seminar paper (2000 words): 40% * Test (2 hours): 30%
