The notion that societies are structured in accordance with patterns of inequality, either `natural' or imposed, has long provided sociology with some of its most significant and lively debates. These debates range over class, status and power; ideology; social mobility; education; work; racial and gender differences; and other issues of central concern to sociology. In this subject we will explore these debates as our theoretical and substantive themes. One major aim will be to introduce students to as much Australian material as possible.
