Australian democracy

This subject is concerned with the institutions of politics and government in Australia and with the principles upon which they are founded. The constitution, parliaments, the executive, the judiciary, bureaucracy, federalism, responsible government, heads of state, political parties, Aboriginal political organisations, environmental organisations and power elites are considered against the development of the corporate state under economic and social stress. The central theme of the subject is the nature of democracy and the embodiment of democratic principles within Australian political institutions.

Assessment

Written (3000 words): 50% * Examinations (3 hours): 50%
