Ethics and public policy

8 points * 3 hours per week * Second semester * Peninsula * Prerequisites: PLT1531/2 and PLT1541/2, or approved equivalent

This subject is designed to develop in students a sophisticated appreciation of the interplay between moral theory and practical public decision making. Some of the main topics are: is there any difference between public and private morality? What should we decide about the morality of IVF, abortion, euthanasia, assassination and nuclear weapons? Has the environment an intrinsic value?

Assessment

Written (4000 words): 60% * Examinations (2 hours): 40%
