Specific current issues arising out of advances in biomedical technology will be considered. Topics will be selected from: abortion, surrogate parenthood, in-vitro fertilisation, sex selection, the sanctity versus quality of life debate, the keeping alive of severely damaged newborn babies, genetic engineering and the allocation of medical resources. The bearing of various philosophical theories about the nature of ethics, intentional action and persons on the discussion of these topics will be examined, along with their legal and social ramifications.
