The role and performance of law enforcement agencies in a modern democratic society. An introduction to the history and development of law. Ferdinand Tonnie's concepts of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft and their impact upon the development of law. Durkheim's view of mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Social change and its relationship to legal change. The development of law enforcement; police, non-police law enforcement and private security services. The Australian intelligence community. Terrorism - political and law enforcement responses. Civil liberties, law and social mores.
