Music composition workshop

The aim is to study the theory and practice of contemporary musical composition. The theory component consists of (1) a survey of contemporary aesthetics, emphasising the stylistic and conceptual diversity of contemporary music; (2) the study of compositional techniques and strategies; and (3) the analysis of representative contemporary musical works. Students are asked to study selected works, compare four works for different combinations and styles, write program notes on each composition, and work with other students to perform their compositions in a public concert.

Assessment

Written (composition folio consisting of two original works): 70% (content 30%, notation 20%, presentation, 20%) * Workshops and concert performance of at least one original work: 30%
