Twentieth-century compositional techniques

8 points * 3 hours per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MUS2110 and MUS2120

Atonal and serial techniques are studied by means of composition, analysis and performance. Basic aspects of electronic music making are introduced in laboratory sessions. Tape recorders, sound mixes, recording facilities and music computers are provided to enable students to record, modify, sequence and sample sounds to produce short edited pieces of electronic music. This subject is also available as a 4-point unit for BMus performance majors.

Assessment: 8-point subject

Written (1000 words): 20% * Examination (BMus performance majors are exempted) (2 hours): 40% * Assignments (2000 words or notations): 40%

Assessment: 4-point subject

Written (1000 words): 20% * Assignments (2000 words or notations): 80%
