The study of dance

8 points * 2 hours per week * Semester 2 * Clayton

The subject aims to introduce students to the range of ideas and concepts related to the study of dance. The semester will be divided into three topics: (1) Dance in the context of culture - the anthropological view; who dances? why? when? where? (2) Overview of the history of dance in the western world - from archaic societies to contemporary dance in Australia. (3) Dance as an art form - what is known, how is it known, critical theory and studies in style, form and content.

Assessment

Written (3000 words): 50% * Seminar participation and one class paper to be written up as a 2500-word assignment: 50%
