Modern Greek language and culture A

6 points * 4 hours per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: VCE Modern Greek or equivalent knowledge of the language

The subject aims to consolidate prior knowledge of Modern Greek, and to introduce students to the study of modern Greek culture and thought through (1) practical language work and a systematic study of the language and (2) reading authentic texts (including creative literature) in Greek and discussing them in Greek orally and in writing. Topics studied include the Greek folk songs and traditional society; the Ottoman period and the Greek War of Independence; the `language problem'; Vasilis Arvanitis, a study in levendia.

Assessment

Written (2000 words): 25% * Examinations (2 hours): 50% * Language assignments and exercises, oral test: 25%
