Introduction to management

6 points * 3 hours per week * First/Second semester * Clayton

This subject aims to develop in students an ability to conceptualise the basic principles of management. Theories of management are discussed in their historical and social context. The environmental, legal, political, social and cultural elements within which organisations function are described. An introduction is made to the functions of management, planning and decision making, managerial control systems, and the organisation processes. Structural and organisational forms are discussed, and the links between these forms, organisational culture, strategy and other aspects of organisations and management is considered. Alternative views of the management function and organisations are also considered. With MCG1030, with is a foundation subject upon which students may build a speciality in management.

Assessment

Assignment 1 (1500 words): 15% * Assignment 2 (2500 words): 25% * Examination (3 hours): 60%
