Linguistic foundations for learners and (future) teachers of English as a second language or of other languages. The subject is practical in nature, examining problems of interference in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, as well as those arising from conflicting sociocultural patterns which may have a bearing on the development of the learner's competence. In their assignments students will be given the opportunity of concentrating on one particular language, including an Australian Aboriginal language or a migrant language, in contrast to English.
Assessment
Written (4000 words): 30% * Examinations (2 hours): 60% * Tutorial participation: 10%
