Critical debate in contemporary Japan A

4 points * 1.5 hours per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisite: Completion of two 8-point subjects in Japanese studies or the prior approval of the subject convener

The subject will be organised in a seminar fashion and will begin by introducing students to some of the parameters which define debate in Japan: the logic of theory, the forums of debate, and the policy-making framework. It will then introduce students to a series of debates on important phenomena which are affecting the directions in which Japan is headed at the end of the twentieth century.

Assessment:

Written (2000 words): 70% * Examination: 30%
