This course examines economic, strategic and cultural aspects of the Australia-Japan relationship from an historical perspective, looks at major issues relating to the development of the Australia-Japan relationship: nineteenth-century fears of an Asian influx; an unwelcome ally during World War I; growing trade ties in the period leading up to World War II; the wartime experience of Australians; Australia's role in the Allied occupation of Japan; postwar resources diplomacy; Japan's emergence as Australia's major trading partner; and the ramifications of the MFP.
