Japanese popular culture

8 points * 3 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: first year Japanese language or Japanese studies sequence or combination

This course will look at all aspects of popular culture in Japan, concentrating on the contemporary period. Some antecedents in the sphere of traditional culture will be treated. Major topics include popular fiction, film, television and other media, comics, pop music, sport and travel.

Assessment

Essay (2000 words): 40% * Tutorial presentation: (1500 words): 25% * Tutorial participation (500 words): 10% * Examinations (2 hours, 2000 words): 25%
