Sources of contemporary Japanese culture and society

This subject is the first of two which provide a necessary introduction to Japan for students who take Japanese language or wish to proceed to further Japanese studies subjects. It traces the development of Japan from premodern to modern times. It introduces the student to the historical and sociocultural sources of contemporary Japanese culture and society. This subject is recommended strongly to students taking a language course. JPS1070 is based wholly on English language sources.

Assessment

Essay (2500 words): 50% * Tutorial presentation and participation: 15% * Examination (2 hours): 35%
