Southeast Asia: the early modern era to circa. 1900

8 points * 2 lectures and 1 tutorial per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: A first year sequence in history or Indonesian/Malay

The subject covers all of Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis upon Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. It explores the great cultural, political and economic transformations which shaped modern Southeast Asia, including the coming of Islam, Theravada Buddhism and the Europeans to the region. It ends with the creation of the great colonial empires of the nineteenth century. Lectures provide a general framework, while tutorials focus on analytical issues; students will have opportunities to influence tutorial topics.

Written (4000 words): 60% * Examination (2 hours): 40%
