Modern America: the American people and the United States, 1877-1960

8 points * 2 lectures and 1 tutorial per week * Second semester * Clayton * With the permission of the head of the department, intending majors in English, politics or American studies with a special interest in American literature, US politics, or other area of American studies may take HSY2230 without having completed a first-year history sequence

Together with HSY2230, this subject provides an introduction to the economic, social, cultural, intellectual, religious, political, military and diplomatic history of the American people and the United States from the Civil War and Reconstruction to the present. Attention will be paid to the study of race, gender and the history of working-class and ethnic minority cultures. Combined with HSY2230, this subject is designed to contribute to an understanding of the contemporary USA and its place in the world. Students will be encouraged to specialise in the study of aspects of US history which particularly interest them, eg in the research essay.

Assessment

Written (4000 words): 60% * Examination (2 hours): 30% * Class participation/attendance: 10%
