Since the nineteenth century, the Chinese have been searching for an alternative world view and new political forms. The subject will focus on how different social groups responded and how each contributed to the development of a new national order and identity. Some of the issues covered are how nationalism related to historians, merchants, peasants, soldiers, students, feminists, and writers of social protest.
