The subject aims to provide students with a broader understanding of how sociological knowledge can be applied to explain the social dimensions and implications of substantive issues in contemporary Australian and other societies. It builds on many of the analytical and conceptual ideas introduced in GSC4211 `Theory and practice in sociology' and applies them in an issue-based context. In this way, students are introduced to both the application of sociological knowledge as well as the examination of the role of research in the evaluation of social issues. This subject will run as a seminar with a staff member to facilitate discussion. Seminar discussion will also centre on students' research projects and dissertations.
Assessment
One essay (6000 words): 70% * Seminar papers (3000 words in total): 30%
