This is the second subject in the global and regional studies core of subjects offered as the interdisciplinary first year in the history and politics major. It is to be offered as one of the core subjects in the internationalisation of the BA. This subject will focus on the political social and economic ideas that have shaped the world in the twentieth century and especially since 1945. Topics explored include the clash of ideas and the `victory' of liberal democracy; the `God King' principle and the ordering of kingdoms and states; the evolution of the nation-state; the growth of liberalism and democracy; nationalism and decolinisation; the emergence of Asian forms of social order; and the collapse of communism and the quest for open societies.
