Selected studies in meteorology and climatology

12 points * 5 hours per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: 16 points of second-year physical geography, biology or earth sciences or permission of the head of department

This subject takes a practical and applied approach to some selected climatological and environmental problems. Topics covered may include techniques in radiation climatology, air pollution meteorology and climatology, agricultural climatology, alpine meteorology and climatology, and hydrometeorology. Associated practical and field work may include experience with radiation and micro-meteorological instrumentation; the measurement, analysis and modelling of air pollution; the assessment of climate interactions with alpine snowpack; and the determination of the energy balance-thermal response of rivers undergoing modification by society.

Assessment

Written (4500 words): 55% * Examination (3 hours): 40% * Practical work: 5%
