This subject focuses on the study of higher mental processes. It aims to provide students with a firm foundation of theory and research in the study of the human mind. Included in lectures will be substantive fundamental issues of cognitive psychology such as pattern recognition, attention, memory, imagery, language comprehension and production, reading, problem solving, creativity, reasoning, and decision making. Laboratory classes build upon this theoretical background in an attempt to isolate specific mechanisms underlying performance in cognitive tasks. Laboratory sessions also illustrate important experiments in cognition and clarity central concepts in a practical manner. Students will use their cognitive processes to learn about them and their relevance to everyday, real-world experiences. Distance education students are required to attend a two-day weekend or residential school program.
