The subject provides an overview of the field of psychology encompassed by applied aspects of social psychology and community psychology. To this end, theory and practice are examined in relation to social issues. Theoretical and practical aspects of appropriate intervention strategies and solutions to social problems are canvassed. Students will have an opportunity to examine the ways that psychology can be used for the enhancement of human welfare and community well-being. Topics covered include empowerment, citizen participation, health promotion, prevention of mental and physical disorders, ecological or environmental influences on behaviour, the impact of economic factors on mental health, stress-strain relationships and the psychological sense of community, and changing people's attitudes. For distance education students, attendance at weekend schools is strongly recommended but not compulsory.
