The objective of this subject is to analyse political and social developments in Russia from the ascendance of Gorbachev to the present. Particular attention is given to the influence of social forces and the creation of new institutions. The major questions that will recur throughout the term include the following: To what extent are political developments affected by what could be considered `purely' Russian conditions? How far has Russia become `de-sovietised'? What are the sources of opposition and stability currently at work in the present-day Russian Federation? Major themes in the subject include national problems, the development and participation of new elites in the political process, party politics, institutional relationships and current social problems.
