Europe today: problems of integration

This subject seeks to analyse some of the problems confronting further integration in contemporary Europe. The core areas of focus are on determining the validity of a single European experience; economic and social `development' versus `backwardness'; integration theories; the division of Europe and its reunification; the successes and failures of supra-national institutions; social consequences of the moves towards the market in the former Communist countries of Europe and their repercussions throughout Europe; migration; nationalism and racism; social welfare; the status of women; transitions from `authoritarian' and `totalitarian' rule and environmental politics.
