This is the second part of the European studies core course. It examines the development of European society in the twentieth century, with an emphasis on contemporary European political and economic problems. Topics include the Great Depression, fascism and communism, the human, social, and political effects of the Second World War and of the division of Europe, and the relative importance of the state and market in the two systems. The subject considers the economic, political and social foundations of the two postwar economic systems (capitalism and communism), and looks at the end of the Cold War, the collapse of communism, and the forces which might tend towards European unity or disunity.
