This subject examines literary texts and ideas in relation to the society which produces them, and in relation to changing approaches to literary theory and criticism. In 1995 the study will consider representations of the family in a range of `realist' texts, considering ways in which elements of Freudian psychology and structuralist theory can assist our understanding. As well, the subject will explore connections among such literary concepts as melodrama, tragedy and realism in relation to the prescribed texts.
