Shakespeare: text and performance

8 points * 2 hours (plus 2 hours optional) per week * First semester * Clayton

This subject will explore dramatic techniques and meanings lost and found, in selected texts of Shakespeare's plays, as they have been performed in the past and in our time. There will be one compulsory lecture-seminar (2 hours per week) and one optional lecture/performance seminar (2 hours per week). The play chosen for the performance option in 1995 is Macbeth.

Assessment

Essay (1500 words): 30% * Oral paper (1500 words): 30% * Examination (3 hours) or participation in the performance seminar which will include either written work and performance or a long essay (3000 words): 40%
