Introduction to critical and literary theory
K Hart
8 points * One 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour seminar per week * First semester * Clayton
This subject provides an introduction to the main debates in critical and literary theory this century. It will examine two overlapping sets of questions - historical and analytical. On the one hand it will look at the changing conceptions of `literature' and `criticism' and what the institution of English has been imagined to do in and for society. On the other hand it will examine some of the most striking arguments about the nature and interpretation of literary texts. Although the subject is wide ranging, it will involve discussion about hermeneutics and semiotics, formalism and feminism, Marxism and cultural redemption. It will consistently follow one thread, namely the fundamental question if what we call `literature' is an essence or a convention.
