Inventing Australia: Australian cultural stereotypes

Proposed to be offered next in 1996

6 points * 2.5 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ENH1010 or ENH1030

The subject will examine a number of Australian cultural stereotypes, such as the bushranger, the digger, the aboriginal, the larrikin, the hippie. Texts which have helped construct these stereotypes will be compared with others which contradict or challenge them in different ways, and a variety of questions will be raised concerning ideas of national identity.

Assessment

Seminar paper (1000 words): 20% * Essay (1500 words): 30% * Examination (2 hours): 50%
