The study of dance

8 points * 3 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton

The subject aims to introduce students to the range of ideas and concepts related to the study of dance. The semester will be divided into three topics: (1) Dance in the context of culture - the anthropological view - Who dances? Why? When? Where?; (2) An overview of the history of dance in the Western world, from ancient times to contemporary dance in Australia; (3) Dance as an art form - what is known, how it is known, critical theory and studies in style, form and content.

Assessment

Essay (3000 words): 50% * Seminar participation, and one class paper to be written up as 2500-word assignment: 50%
