Reading the past - European cinema, history and national identity

A survey of the contribution of European cinema to the (re) construction of national identities, with particular reference to the interpretations of the recent past offered by postwar European cinema and the way in which the ideological turmoil that resulted from the two world wars is reflected in and portrayed by the films studied. A selection of (subtitled) European films will be studied, including works by Angelopoulos, Bertolucci, Bu-uel, Saura and de Sica.
