From Greek culture to international culture: the Hellenistic era

G J Fitzgerald

8 points * 2 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton

The subject examines the period between the so-called `classical' eras of Greek and Roman civilisations. It was at this time that Greek culture became an international culture as its influence spread through the Mediterranean world and beyond. Via an examination of a range of social, philosophical and artistic issues, and a close study of specific works, the subject will consider both the nature of Hellenistic culture and its influence upon ensuing European traditions.

Assessment:

Written (4000 words): 65% * Examinations (2 hours): 35%
