Given that anthropological work in Papua New Guinea has been carried out in a colonial or post-colonial setting, it is important that the resulting texts be examined with this fact in mind. Thus, in this subject anthropological debates are discussed in terms of the interrelationships between small-scale `traditional' societies and Western sociopolitical structures.
