The rise of Macedon

J R Ellis

8 points * 2.5 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton

The middle of the fourth century BCE saw a sudden growth of military power and political influence on the part of the previously peripheral kingdom of Macedon. Under Philip II, Macedonian control was established over mainland Greece and beyond, and under his son Alexander the Great the process extended as far south as Egypt and as far east as northern India. With special reference to the period 360-320 BCE, the course examines the nature and progress of this expansion as well as the ways in which it was interpreted at the time and in subsequent centuries.
