Master of Arts by research

Students who have Honours 2A or above or the equivalent may enrol for an MA by thesis alone. As part of their preparation they will receive appropriate instruction in reference bibliography. The thesis consists of 40,000-60,000 words

Master of Arts by coursework and by coursework and minor thesis

The minimum requirement for entry to Part I (forty-eight points; one year full-time or normally two years part-time) of the MA program is a pass degree with credit level grades or better in at least the third part of a major sequence in French. The minimum level for direct entry to Part II (forty-eight points; one-year full- time or normally two-years part-time) of the MA program is an honours degree with a grade of H2B or better in French (MA by coursework only) or an honours degree with a grade of H2A or better in French (MA by coursework and thesis). In all cases qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the faculty board may be accepted for entry to the various levels of the MA program.

MA Part I

The program will normally be as follows:

(i) FRM4140.16 French language IV

(ii) FRM4200.16 French dissertation

(iii) two of the following:

* FRM4160.08 Culture and difference: French writing in North Africa and Canada

* FRM4250.08 French film: the new wave and after

* FRM4310.08 French linguistics: topics in syntax and semantics

* FRM4370.08 Introduction to French phonology

* FRM4480.08 Poetry and poetics in modern France

* FRM4610.08 Seventeenth-century French theatre

* FRM4710.08 The French Enlightenment

* FRM4850.08 Reading the feminine: sexuality and power in nineteenth-century France

* FRM4890.08 The making of modern Paris, 1760-1860

* FRM4910.08 The twentieth century: shaping a new age

* FRM4960.08 Special reading course in French I

* FRM4970.08 Special reading course in French II

MA Part II

Either four of the twelve-point semester subjects from the following list (not all of which will be available every year), or two of the listed subjects in their eight-point form plus a thesis (25,000-35,000 words).

All students will attend an introductory workshop on reference bibliography as part of their preparation for chosen subjects and/or for the thesis.
